I’ve paused the TV on the moment in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York when he realises the creepy pigeon lady isn’t really that bad after all. I feel like I’m beating the system when I find something of value whilst gleaning through the charity shops, yet at other times it feels utterly tragic. Making sculpture is temporary, fleeting and decaying, a maintenance act against the pressures. I hope objects can be activated by meaning, rummaging for materials allows me the possibility of existing in an infrastructure that doesn’t support me, a deliberate effort to disrupt the relentless churn of the capitalist machine. Sculpture isn’t in the monumental, but in the small snippets of care and attention, in the gathering together of words and weeds grown in hope.
